On day 2 of our unscripted motor tour from Naples to Florence via the Amalfi Coast, we again found ourselves looking for a place to stay. We came across Tenuta Montelauro on Google maps. Having heard and read so much lately about agritourism, I was anxious to give it a try. My guess is that they don't get a lot of walk-in guests, so were probably a bit confused by our unannounced arrival and request for 2 rooms for the night. That confusion quickly faded and their hospitality and cordiality shined through. The entire facility seems nearly new. The rooms are large and comfortable. We had first floor rooms (one above ground level) that opened onto a large shared patio overlooking heavily forested grounds. This place specializes in their own dry-cured meats. You pick your cut of meat from the curing "closet". Servings are one kilo per couple. Even with the bone-in cuts, this is an ample serving. The table was set with a generous charcuterie board and a small side salad. The entire meal, including desert and 2 bottles of a very nice local wine came to a bit over €30 per person. Breakfast, included in the €70 fee per room was equally generous in size and every bit as delicious. We believe you cannot go wrong with this hotel. I rate it excellent in every regard.

My stay at Tenuta Montelaura was incredible, the owners were very kind and hospitable. We stayed during the offseason, but Flavia, the owner opened the kitchen for us and we had an amazing meal featuring products from their farm and regional area. Si mangia bene at Tenuta Montelaura!

This is a good ariturismo experience. It is a working farm, and the family lives and works here.||||The building is modern, only 10-15 years old, but it has a more rustic feel. The room can get a little dark and chilly in the offseason, though is it spotlessly maintained and large, with a lovely balcony. The bathrooms are fine. The B&B is not a place you would necessarily choose to spend the afternoon relaxing at, but it is certainly a comfortable enough place to stay a few nights while exploring things in the area and coming back to eat their wonderful dinners.||||The best part is the food and cooking. The food is largely taken from the farm itself, with meats, wine, cheese, etc. all produced right on site. The family is a farm family going back generations, and knows how to produce wonderful specialities you won't find in normal restaurants. And Flavia's cooking is really wonderful. She cooked local pastas we had never heard of before, with delicious little sauces accompanying them. Their kids do much of the serving -- it really has a warm family feel.||||Lello is brimming with restaurant tips for towns in the area. We tried one of his recommendations, and it was outstanding. He offered us a wine tour, and if we had known earlier, we would have budgeted time for it.||||There is minimal road noise, since the country road that passes by is removed from the house.

We chose to overnight here due to the good reviews on this site. We really wondered if we had gone to the wrong hotel! The owners are very nice, but extremely scruffily dressed and didn't change their clothes while we were there. The rooms are basic, but comfortable and clean. However, we were expecting a wonderful dinner in a family style location, and the reality was very different.||||The dining area is huge with only about 20% being used giving a cold, unused feeling to the downstairs area. It is cold and dark with nothing homely about it. We were served a lovely pasta dish to start which we enjoyed and were looking forward to an Italian culinary experience. This didn't happen. The pasta was as good as it got. We were served and a lump of meat and a side salad drenched in vinegar! That was it. Then some fruit was put on the table, considering of apples and one pear. We were starving so we asked for some cheese. We were presented with a 3 tiny slices of home made cheese and again that was it. We ate the bread basket and went to bed hungry. Throughout the meal, the son and daughter sat behind a desk staring into space with looks of total boredom on their faces. Very off putting! ||||Breakfast was a cup of coffee and a pastry! That was it.... Hungry again.||||We were presented with a bill for €20 each for the dinner plus an additional €5 for the cheese, plus €10 per bottle for the home made wine. We felt ripped off. ||||It's hard to write a bad review for the Tenuta as the family were very nice people, but they could really up their game without too much trouble.

Tenuta Montelaura was everything we hoped for and more. Our family was welcomed with superb hospitality and a stupendous meal. We quickly became friends with our beautiful hosts enjoying wonderful conversations over a traditional Italian breakfast. The rooms were spacious, clean and extremely comfortable. The grounds were surrounded by stunning hills with breathtaking views. One could enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace under many a starlit evening. Our hosts shared not only their conversation and fantastic organic, locally produced food but offered many outings. We spent a joyful afternoon in a vineyard sampling local wine and getting a firsthand look at how it was made. We hope to return often and highly recommend a visit to Tenuta Montelaura.

Our visit was during the record rains of November. While the pictures showed sunshine and green, we missed that. The trade-off was a wonderful experience anyway. We have stayed in owner-run B&B's in the US but Lello and Flavia took much greater interest in seeing that we had a nice visit than is typical of other places we have stayed. Our hobby is wine and Lello had time to take us to the vineyards of two friends who make very good wine and are passionate about their businesses.--Cantina del Barone and Colle de S. Domenico. With local bread, cheese and salami, the rainy day was well spent!|| Flavia loves to cook and was happy to show me how to make pasta dough and hand-form the pasta shapes typical to this part of Campagna. It is really hard to do, too. With truly local (their own) ingredients a part of every meal, we ate well...and too much.|| The room we had was roomy and pleasant with a very nice bathroom. Our only complaint , a minor one, was that in dark November there is not enough light to read in the room. We are sure this would have been addressed had we mentioned it.|| We look forward to visiting again when the sun actually shines and would not hesitatie to recommend this to others. Foodies take notice!

We visited in April and only because I was so busy when we got home did I delay my review. Traveling on the seasonal fringe has its advantages, but the weather was rather abysmal then- cold and verywet- leading to warped doors to the patio, etc. The food was very good and from prior experience, I appreciate that Flavia spends time preparing pasta from scratch. She tried to teach me: I'm hopeless. We were served abundant quantities of food. Much of the meat and vegetables are home-raised. There is great respect for the whole animal and the environment. The experience is what I expected when staying in the country. We really liked the house-label Taurasi made by Lello. Thanks for setting up the wine visit in Campania and the one in Basilicata after we left!|| If there is something amiss, a guest should immediately let Lello or Flavia know. They can anticipate many guest needs, but are not mind readers. We loved being with them and look forward to an opportunity to go there again.

We visited for 2 nights in early August 2011, and had a wonderful time. Flavia and Raphael are lovely hosts and very welcoming. Our room was on the top floor, corner suite and had a wonderful cross breeze for our afternoon naps! Tenuta is located a short drive (30 mins) from the busy port of Naples and we were very happy to have some quiet time and break up our drive from Sicily enroute to Rome. Tenuta Montelaura is very clean, very quiet and peaceful. I highly recommend that you have lunch or dinner on property, as Flavia is a fantastic cook. Her menu's are on the website and they are slow cooked, organic and delicious. Most of the food is prepared from scratch, using eggs from their own chickens, olives from their fields, chestnuts from their trees, and pork and meat from their own flock. Make sure you ask to try their chestnut honey and cheese - just amazing! Raphael is a sommelier and his wines boast some great varietals. He is so knowledgeable of local wines and producers and even organized a wine tour and tasting for my boyfriend and I to taste some local production. What a wonderful day that was! And topped it off with a pasta lesson from Flavia in her beautiful kitchen. Their children are lovely and help out the guests. We were fortunate enough to join the family for dinner a couple of nights and it was so much fun! We felt like one of the family!
